Classification

High schools in Nebraska are assigned into classes that are determined by the size of the school's enrollment. From largest to smallest, Nebraska high school activity classes are:

  • AA (used only in music)
  • A
    • A1 (unofficial)
    • A2 (unofficial)
  • B
  • C - in certain activities, divided into:
    • C1
    • C2
  • D - in certain activities, divided into:
    • D1
    • D2

The number of classes used for each activity varies by the number of participating schools and by the nature of the activity; football, volleyball, basketball, plays and speech are the only activities that are divided into six classes. An additional classification, D3, was used for 6-man football until that sport was dropped from NSAA oversight after the 1998 season.

Each activity has its own standards for classification. For example, a high school may compete in Class D1 for football, Class C2 for volleyball, and Class D for track and field.
